Math Teachers – Why You Need To Document Everything!

“In the old days” of teaching, almost everyone understood that there was an appropriate chain of command to follow if a parent had a complaint about a teacher. Parents knew that the appropriate 1st step was to call the teacher, arrange for a conference, and deal with any issue at the source. I am directing this article to math teachers because we so often are dealing with parents who have very negative feelings about math from their own school days; but in reality, everything here is appropriate for teachers of all ages and subjects.

In the old days, if a parent tried to shortcut this process by starting higher up the chain of command, say with the department chair, the chairperson–who had no knowledge of the situation–would correctly respond to the parent by saying, “Have you discussed this with the teacher yet?” The parent was forced to start at the teacher level. Only if the issue couldn’t be resolved at the teacher level, would the issue go higher; and both parent and teacher would meet with the department chairperson go math grade 4. Most difficulties were solved at that level. But if not, then things moved up the chain of command. This is how the system should work.

Unfortunately, over the years, things have changed in a negative direction. Some parents seem to have lost sight of what the goal should be. One would assume that the parent’s goal would be to work out the issue in a way that leads to the student’s success. That can only happen by resolving whatever the issue is with the classroom teacher. Hopefully, the parent/teacher conference will be about solutions, and not about accusations only.

Many parents do, indeed, still follow the proper course of action; but a few parents have started side-stepping the chain of command and going straight to the top–either the principal or the superintendent. Neither of these individuals have any idea what the problem is, so they are hearing only one side of the issue–usually with embellishments. Why is this happening and what are teachers to do about it?

When parents bypass the teacher, we can only assume that they know they won’t get the satisfaction they want from the teacher. Whether they really know their child is being less than truthful, or they have some other issue is really a moot point. Their actions say that they are more interested in punishment of the teacher than in resolving anything in a way to benefit their child. In addition, it seems that fewer and fewer administrators are willing to respond with “Have you discussed this with the teacher?”

During my last year of teaching I had the new experience of having a parent call my principal because I gave her son’s homework assignment 3 points while one of his friends got 4 points (out of 5 points). I ended up having to spend over an hour justifying this one point (that would have had no effect on his grade) to this parent. As I learned later, her son was a serious under achiever; but rather than dealing with her son’s issues, she tried every semester to place blame on at least one of his teachers. Rather than having her son explain why he turned in an incomplete assignment, she chose to argue with me over a single point. (Can you tell that I’m still angry about it? Such a waste of everyone’s time!)

What did I learn from this experience (other than that I was thankful to be retiring)? First and foremost, no matter how hard you work at being the perfect teacher, you are not going to please everyone; so it is important that you protect yourself from unfair treatment. But how do you do that?

First, if something happens in class that you anticipate is going to cause a problem in some way, contact your department chair immediately. It might also be a good idea to call the parents immediately–before the child has a chance to make up a story. Discuss this with your department chair.

Is It a Good Time to Go to University During a Financial Downturn?

When you turn on the TV all the news programmes talk about gloom and doom in the world economy; low growth in the Euro-zone, market uncertainty, countries adversely affected by world markets and financial traders. We saw what happened during the banking crisis of 2008 which was triggered by the collapse of the mortgage market in USA and every major trading nation in the world went on to experience a recession or a period of low growth.

At the moment the governments in some Euro zone countries have large debts caused by years of overspending and on top of this are currently paying high rates to borrow money. Most degrees take between 3-4 years to complete so going to university over this period could be a good option as most economists predict that the world’s economy will be in still be experiencing limited growth and possibly recession over the next one to three years. This environment makes it more difficult for companies to prosper and expand. On a brighter note the world’s economies will grow stronger and companies will experience a time of growth and therefore will be recruiting in large numbers again. Therefore, going to university and increasing your potential of getting a well paid job is a sensible option when the job market is predicted to be very competitive.

Choosing the Right University

You also need to be clever about choosing the right university and degree course, as you need to make the most of you time in university to gain the skill that differentiate you from the competition. Choose a well respected university with an applied degree (engineering, law, medicine, teaching…) will make it easier for you to find a job when you finally leave university.

Being Smart in University

Lots of people will also be going to university over the next few years so you need to make the most of your time in university to build a convincing CV for when the time comes for you to find a job. Consider joining societies and clubs in the students’ union. Also look for part-time work and summer jobs as it will not only help you to support your time at university but it will also develop your future employability. Some people even go travelling after they have completed their degrees as this builds on their experiences of the world which can’t be a bad thing to talk about during job interview. I think that one of the best things that you can do during your studies is to find a degree course that supports internships as you can evaluate future jobs and employers during the security of your university degree.

Are you like many engineers; highly trained to solve technical problems but not as confident with your people skills? There is a big difference between engineering design and business management. For many engineers it is extremely difficult to transition from engineer to manager. Since business and management are not usually classes in engineering college, engineers are expected to obtain their business skills through experience and continuing education. Why is Education Important and What is the Purpose of Education

Most of the State Licensing Boards require Professional Engineers to renew their professional licenses periodically with a minimum number of continuing education units. These units are usually Professional Development Hours (PDH) or Continuing Education Units (CEU). One PDH is equivalent to one hour of course education, and one CEU is equivalent to ten PDH or ten hours of course education. To obtain these units of continuing education the professional engineer will attend or teach the seminars, classes, or courses, write articles, or sit on professional boards or committees. Nearly all of the states that require continuing education credits accept business or managerial courses as long as they are related to engineering. Community College and University Continuing Education Courses – These institutions regularly offer courses on numerous topics. Since the courses have to appeal to a wide audience, they usually do not cover technical topics that would be of interest to engineers. You can find business topics, but these courses are very general. Management courses that can apply to engineers my have words like “professional services” and “technical industry” in the course title.

Vendor Seminar (Lunch Presentation) – This has been one my favorite sources. It usually starts by a product vendor giving you a call. He will ask if you would be interested in a presentation at your office. If you are interested you may say “Yes, but I will need for the presentation to be made at my office during lunch our hour. The attendees will be my engineers and designers, and I will need for you to bring lunch.” Your team will listen to the vendor’s presentation, review his products and literature, ask technical questions, and enjoy lunch. Each of your Professional Engineers gains about 0.5 PDH.

On-the-Job Training – Some firms actually have monthly training sessions for their engineers and support staff. The subjects can be on a wide array of technical, ethical, and managerial topics. As long as the subject covered, who made the presentation, who attended the training, date of the training session, and time spent training is documented, these sessions can count as continuing education.

Seminars – These courses are often held in a hotel conference room for a few hours to several days. Usually the courses offer continuing education credit of 8 PDH per day. If you have to travel to attend the seminar, your additional expenses beyond the cost of the seminar will include lodging, air fares, rental car, and dining. A three-day course can easily exceed several thousands dollars. Also take into account that during this time you will not be working on any contracts, your company will loss billable hours.

Convention and Conferences – These events offers the attendee a multitude of course topics. Attending one four-day convention, you can easily obtain all of the continuing education credits needed to renew your professional license. Like seminars if the convention is away from your home town, you will have additional expenses including lodging, air fares, rental car, and dining. Also since you are away from your office, you will loss billable hours. Again, a convention can cost you or your office thousands of dollars.

Home Study Courses – These courses have been around for a long time; long before the computer. The course material is sent to your home. You study the material, answer the quiz, and return the quiz. A week or two later a Course Completion certificate is sent to you. These types of course are being replaced by Online Courses as discussed below.

Online Seminars – This is becoming a very popular program. Seminars that are online are often quite a bit less expensive than actually attending a seminar. Not only are the courses cheaper, but the attendee also saves due to no traveling, lodging, dining, or other expenses. Of course, the attendee will have to find a quite area to sit-up the computer and speakers, and to post a sign on the door saying “Do Not Disturb”. Once the seminar is completed you receive a Certificate of Completion with the number of PDH or CEU earned.

Online Courses – These courses are much like the home study course but everything is done over the internet. You can take the course 24/7, and you usually have instant access to the quiz and the certificate of completion. These courses are the most economical and convenient for the engineer. You can just about study any topic; technical, ethical, or managerial. Most websites tend toward the technical topics. While only a few websites specialize in the business of engineering. Since most of these courses are written by engineers, it is understandable that most of the courses are technical.

Most engineers have excellent technical skills, but not necessarily the same level of expertise in business management and marketing. It is the responsibility of the engineer to develop these management skills through continuing education. Continuing education can be obtained through Community Colleges, Universities, Professional Training Programs, Professional Organizations, and online training courses. In most states continuing education courses qualify for continuing education units (CEU) or Professional Development Hours (PDH).
